Gifted Lawry

This weeks artist feature really needs no introduction by now, since he landed, or rather made his presence known in the music scene, he has been on more lips than than lipstick since its creation cos of his genius & comedic puns and uncanny flow. Essy caught up with him to know more about the dude behind the name Lawry

How did the name Lawry come about?

Lawry
Well, it was actually "Gift Leremi" at first, the late Orlando Pirates winger. We shared a first name & so my soccer team mates thought it would be fitting. When he died, it felt awkward being called Leremi so they somehow cut it into Lawry & I guess it stuck.

Essy
A lot of people knew you as the crazy funny guy and were quite surprised when it was said that you're a rapper... How did you actually come out as a rapper?

Lawry
I, actually, always was. I just didn't have any people around me who were doing music at the time. The minute I got outta high school, I ran into a lot of producers & rappers in Durban & so I got back on that horse.

great stuff hey.. and is there any stable that's snatched you up already?

Lawry 
4DaRecord but funny enough, I approached THEM, knowing damn well they don't just sign randoms. I guess I impressed them

Essy
lol yess, that they don't.. not to be biased or anything hihi.. So you basically are still fresh in the so-called "game".. Anything that you're currently working on right now?

Lawry
A little mixtape I guess. I'll put together about 10 tracks for you guys. I dunno yet.

Essy
Who do you want to work with when it comes to actually putting that tape together?

Lawry
 I can't think of anyone in particular right now.

hehe speaking of artists.. Regarding the battle with Peace, you're quite the topic on everyone's lips, causing controversy.. #R.I.P and #Obituary, care to comment on that?

Lawry
#RIP pretty much covers it. First of all, it wasn't a diss (getting that out of the way), I was upset at how unfairly the battle went & I was just emphasising on that. Also, people don't read posts, but you put your thoughts on a track & BOOM! Controversy 101

lol and you caused umnyakazo for real hey.. What would be your reaction if Peace released a track responding to that?

Lawry
I don't wanna get ahead of myself here, but there's really no way of responding to that. It's that good. If he does, it won't be as good. That's why I'm so sure he won't. It's dead & gone.

lol rappers and their ego's haha.. anyways, now that w've heard about Lawry the rapper, could you tell us more about Gift Shozi and his background?

Lawry
Well, HE'S just nonsense. He's an I.T. Student in Durban who spends his days wishing he'd grow Lawry into a bigger star than he is. Lol Background? Let's see. He's a total cheese boy. Never lived a day eKasi. So it's pretty hard to target Kasi fans when you're using words like "titanium" or "Shakespear" or "Homework" lol
